Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the IRS extended the deadline for eligible financial institutions to file Form 8966, The FATCA Report. The filing is extended to 15 July 2020 (from 31 March 2020).
The IRS explained that Form 8809-I, Application for Extension of Time to File FATCA Form 8966, will not be required for this extension.
This extension applies to Model 2 IGA countries. As of March 2020, the IRS has signed Model 2 IGAs with 10 countries* around the globe (i.e., Armenia, Austria, Bermuda, Chile, Hong Kong, Japan, Macao, San Marino, Switzerland and Taiwan). Model 1 IGA countries, which is the rest, would be forced to oblige by the rules and regulations established by those countries.
